Polish heritage in Forlì

In the Basilica of San Mercuriale in Piazza Saffi in Forlì, there is a copy of a painting painted by Giuseppe Steffanin in 1946 (the original is in the church of Santa Maria Lauretana). The painting commemorates the Polish soldiers of the 2nd Sentry Battalion of the 2nd Polish Corps. At the bottom of the frame is a plaque with an inscription in Polish and Italian: "Under her protection through toil and victory, bringing liberation, we go to you - Poland. Officers and privates of the 2nd Guards Battalion of the 2nd Corps".

There is also a stone plaque in the shrine commemorating the 5th Border Infantry Division's stay in Forlì. The inscription in Italian and Polish proclaims: "On the trail of their pilgrimage, the soldiers of the 5th Kres.dyw.piech. faithful to Jesus Christ and to the Republic of Poland, covered with glory in the relentless struggle for the freedom of their homeland and all the people of the world, leaving the hospitable thresholds of M. Forlì offer a fervent prayer to God for the freedom of the tormented Poland and a better tomorrow of Italy. Forli, 24 October 1945 22 September 1946".
