Polish traces in Odesa

Odesa is undoubtedly one of the most representative cities in Ukraine. Although its fate and that of Poland have never directly intersected, and this metropolis was never for a moment within the borders of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, many testimonies of the activities of our compatriots can be found there. Here are just some of them.

- Potocki Palace - the building was built in the 19th century, on the initiative of Seweryn Potocki , a Polish MP. It is an exemplification of classicist architecture . It houses the Odesa Museum of Art. It was damaged by a Russian attack in 2023.
- Belina-Brzozowski Palace - was built, as the name suggests, by Zenon Belina-Brzozowski, in the 19th century. Its construction was inspired in particular by English neo-Gothic and medieval French architecture . It is interesting to note that the palace was often visited by Juliusz Słowacki and that the building features in the novel "Fame and Glory" by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz.
- The monument to Adam Mickiewicz - was erected in 2004 in honour of the Polish writer. The artist lived in Odesa for 9 months, where he was sentenced after being convicted and sentenced for his activities for the "Society of Philomaths" . , which advocated the restoration of the Republic. He lived in the building of the former Richelieu Lyceum , where there is a plaque dedicated to him today.
- Dr Jozef Moczutkowski' s clinic - the building where Dr Moczutkowski, a Russian doctor of Polish origin, used to work. He used his own funds to build an outpatient clinic for children - mostly patients from families where they could barely make ends meet. He also carried out medical experiments on his own person, which nearly led to his death.
- The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - built in the 19th century. Catholics from our country and from Germany fought to have it built. It was designed by the Polish architect Feliks Gąsiorowski and sketched by Francesco Morandi. It was in turn initiated by Father Grzegorz Razutowicz.
