Monument to Joseph Montwiłł in Vilnius

The monument to Jozef Montvila in Vilnius is located near the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary at 4a Pranciškonų Street. Jozef Montvila was a Polish landowner, social activist and philanthropist. In the 1880s he began working as director of the Land Bank in Vilnius. From 1893 to 1905 he was a councillor of the Vilnius city council. He was active in charitable work for the local population; among other things, he founded the "Biruta" Weaving School in Shatia and the "Lutnia" Art Society, participated in the establishment of the Vilnius Agricultural Society, the Society of Friends of Science, the Society of the Museum of Science and Art, the Society for the Care of Girls, the Society for the Care of Children and the Society for the Arrangement of Housing. He was president of the Municipal Board of Trustees for the Care of the Poor and of the Supervisory Board of the Polish Society "Oświata".
