The tomb of General Józef Karge at the cemetery in Princeton

The tomb of General Józef Karge at the cemetery in Princeton

A gravestone in the form of a massive, vertical stele with a semicircular finial, set on a two-tiered plinth. The sides and plinth are finished in a rusticated texture, with a distinctly rough stone surface. On the front face there is a rectangular, darker and smoother inscription panel.

In the upper part of the stele is a relief featuring military symbolism: crossed cavalry sabres and a broken laurel branch. The composition of the relief is compact and horizontal, subordinate to the stele’s semi-circular finial.

Joseph Karge / Józef Kargé, 1823–1892, a Polish émigré, a soldier in the Union Army during the American Civil War, and later a professor of languages and literature at Princeton. The Princeton Cemetery guide describes him as a Polish patriot, a Union Army general and a professor of languages and literature at Princeton University.
