Monument to Polish Combatants 1939-1945 in Paris

Variants of the name:

Monument Aux Combattants Polonais Morts Pour La France 1939-1945, Paris; Pomnik bojowników polskiego ruchu oporu 1939-1945

The monument to the Polish Veterans who fought for the defence and freedom of France between 1939 and 1945 is located in the Trocadéro gardens, near the Place de Varsovie (Warsaw Square). A competition for its realisation was held in 1976. The sculpture was unveiled on 13 January 1978, before its foundation stone was laid by President Valery Giscard d'Estaing, who deposited soil from sixteen French cemeteries where Polish soldiers were buried (as recalled by a plaque at the foot of the monument). The monument was created by the Algerian-French sculptor André Greck, creator of busts of the bards Jacques Brel and Georges Brassens, among others. The monument depicts a dying Polish soldier, supported with his hands clasped on his chest by a winged figure - an allegory of Victory. An inscription is engraved on the pedestal in French and Polish: 'To the Polish veterans who fought to defend and liberate France 1939-1945'. Two urns were also placed at the monument - with soil from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw and with the ashes of the victims of Auschwitz. The work was made of stone and is about 2.5 metres high.
