The memorial commemorates the air crash of the British transport plane called Liberator which occurred in Gibraltar on 4 July 1943. Sixteen people died in the crash, including the Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Armed Forces and Prime Minister of Poland, General Władysław Sikorski.
