Memorial to the Municipality of Lommis

In the small village of Lommis near Winterthur, the presence of Poles during the Second World War has been commemorated. The initiator was one of the remaining veterans in Switzerland, Jozef Zygmunt, who lives in nearby Schottikon, while the author of the monument was Paweł Polachowski - also a former soldier of the Second Infantry Rifle Division, which was interned in Switzerland in 1940, and known for his many realisations especially in the Winterthur region. The monument is linked to the establishment of internment camps in nearby Matzingen (where a Polish monument was already erected in 1945) and in Lommis itself. In the latter, among other things, vocational courses were held for Polish soldiers, there was also a camp orchestra and choir, and in 1941 the soldier's touring theatre Maryna debuted with a performance. The simple form of the monument: a stele - a flat cuboid - is enriched only by the bronze appliqués: an eagle, the Division cross with the dates 1940-1945 and a "girt" - a plaque with a bilingual inscription: "Der Gemeinde Lommis aus Dankbarkeit von Ehemeligen internierten polnischen Soldaten / In token of gratitude to the municipality of Lommis were Polish soldiers interned". The back side of the stele was decorated on the 50th anniversary of the end of the war with appliqués featuring the symbol of the II DSP (swords with eagle), the coat of arms of the municipality of Lommis, the cross of the Swiss Confederation and the inscription: "8 Mai 1995. 50 Jahre Frieden". The monument stands on the site of the former camp; it is now a car park next to the school building; among the (overgrown) bushes and grasses, the stele is barely visible and, unlike most other memorials to the interned Poles, seems to have been left in a state of oblivion and neglect.
