The monument in honour of Sigismund the Jagiellonian (1467-1548, future King Sigismund I the Old of Poland) is a significant testimony to Polish-German history. It recalls the reign of the Jagiellonian dynasty in Lower Lusatia (Oberlausitz) at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. At the same time, it documents the moment when Sigismund was granted governorship over the area.

The object is located in the ground floor recess of one of the towers (Matthiasturm) of the castle (Ortenburg). The emblem (Wappenschild) held by the angel consists of the heraldic signs of Sigismund's parents: the Polish King Casimir IV Jagiellon and his wife Elisabeth von Habsburg. The Bautzen monument uniquely depicts a monumental copy of the ducal coat of arms, which is rather known only from seals.

Only two years after taking over the governorship of Lower Lusatia, Sigismund was elected king of Poland following the death of his brother Alexander Jagiellon.
