Restoration work in Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv

Information about the object:
In Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv there are several tombstones of the Dzieduszycki family, who have been connected with the city and its surroundings since the 15th century: Poles and Ukrainians. The family's activities are a testimony to the common history and community of values of the nations and states.

The gravestone with an obelisk (plot 10) is the grave of Anastasia Dzieduszycka née Mier (1781-1845), daughter of the Castellan of Livonia Jan and Maria Anna née Tarnowska. The tombstone is located in the oldest part of the cemetery, just off a very busy alley.

The tomb is small in form, with an interesting composition. The obelisk is set on a perpendicular pedestal, topped by a cornice with a floral ornament. The same ornament is also repeated on the lower cornice, which is the base of the plinth. On the front of the plinth is a small slab of grey-blue marble with finely engraved inscriptions. On the obelisk at the front, the lower part of the obelisk shows a coat-of-arms relief, while at the back there is a relief with panoplies. On the other hand, a relief with a bee is on the tapering plane towards the top.

A granite gravestone (plot 13) - buried: Kazimierz and Róża Dzieduszycki with their sons Adam and Stanisław. Kazimierz (1812-1885), son of Andrzej and Antonina, née Gromnicka, was a participant in the November Rising. In 1835, he married Róża, née Matkowska-Boguszewicz (1806-1866). He was a member of the Galician Sejm and the Vienna Council of State; a member of the Supervisory Board of the Galician Mortgage Bank and the Railway Board.

The tomb is located in the main avenue of the cemetery, leading to the Cemetery of the Defenders of Lwów, at the crossroads of several alleys, and has a large surface area. It was made in the modernist style, Built of two granite cuboid slabs of light grey shade, placed side by side, which form a simple mass and form. The whole is set on a sandstone plinth with secondary additions of concrete.

The tombstone of Edmund Dzieduszycki is located in the oldest part of the cemetery in section 2, where the tombstones have received little conservation work. An important project being carried out in the near vicinity is the conservation of the Dunin-Borkowski chapel. Edmund's tomb, especially the first two steps of the pedestal, is covered with a layer of re-deposited earth several tens of centimetres thick, which changes its form and shape. The tomb is made of limestone and grey marble. There is a cast-iron figure of Christ on a stone cross and the whole is surrounded by a decorative metal fence. Edmund Dzieduszycki (1811-1853) was the son of Stanisław Kostka, a Kościuszko insurgent, and Marianna, née Pietruska. He took part in the November Rising, during which he served in the Nadwiślańska Legion. On returning from the war, he married the poet and pianist Talia Niezabitowska, with whom he had two children, Karolina and Aleksander. He died at the age of 42 on 25 November 1853.

The tombstones of Klaudia and Elisabeth and Felicia, on the other hand, are very valuable objects made of white Carrara marble with a lead-cast inscription, which is rare in this cemetery. Very often the lead letters were destroyed by being forged or torn out. In the above-mentioned tombstones, the letters have probably survived because, covered with dirt and build-up, they have become invisible. Both tombstones have analogous crosses crowning the main slab, with a tilted cross arm, and similar type of relief decoration on the slabs. In addition to the signature of L. Schimser on the plinths, this is also indicated by the same sculptor's workshop. The crowning of Felicia's tombstone, are flowers and plant ornamentation developed to a high sculptural level. Klaudia's tombstone had probably already undergone restoration work, as it has a tombstone base made of concrete. Unfortunately, this has deteriorated and cracked, causing the tomb to collapse and the marble stele to slip. Klaudia née Mazaraki (1815-1880) was the second wife of Kajetan Dzieduszycki (1772-1842), son of Dominik Heraclius, who was the progenitor of the younger Dzieduszycki line. She was 21 when she married in 1836, while her husband was 64. They had no children. Unfortunately, no information about her has survived. Her sister Antonina married Klaudia's stepson Władysław, who together with his brother Juliusz initiated the breeding of Arabian horses in Poland. Klaudia rests together with Antonina's granddaughter, Elżbieta Skibniewska. Both tombstones were created in the well-known Lviv workshop of Leopold Schimser, who inherited it from his father Johann. His company often produced high-quality granite, labradorite and marble products according to the best designs. Leopold Schimser collaborated with renowned sepulchral artists Piotr Kozakiewicz, Julian Markowski (son of his sister Maria), Abel Perier, Feliks Krasuski, Pavel Eutele and Antoni Kurzawa. He was a well-known figure in Lviv, presided over the Rifle Society and was twice King of the Chancery.

Completed works:

2020
The aim of the project was to carry out conservation work on two 19th-century tombstones of the Dzieduszycki family:

- with a cross and crown of thorns with Perier's signature (q.v. 68);

- with the Mother of God (q. 2).

The conservation treatment of the tombstones was aimed at stopping the intensive process of disintegration of the stone and other materials used in their construction. Chemical and biological layers were removed. Areas where the gravestones were cracked or had large cavities were protected. The latter - both in the mineral mortar and the stone material - were filled in to restore the legibility of the sculptural form. Reconstruction of the inscribed panels was also carried out. In order to keep the objects in a good state of preservation for as long as possible after conservation, all tombstones were also hydrophobised.

2021
The aim of the project was to carry out conservation work on two 19th-century tombstones located in the Lychakiv Cemetery (in different parts of the cemetery). The objects were selected after a thorough analysis of their state of preservation and artistic value:

1) Tombstone with obelisk (q.10)
. The conservation work carried out has made it possible to restore the artistic and aesthetic values of the tombstone. The historical and symbolic value has also been restored by making the inscription plaque more legible and cleaning the coat-of-arms relief from build-up.

2) Granite gravestone (q.13)
As part of the conservation work, the damaging effects of external agents were removed, and the build-ups that had altered the appearance of the tomb and falsified the true colour of the natural stone were removed.

2022
The next stage of the activities of the Dzieduszycki Family Association in the Lychakiv Cemetery consisted in the conservation of 2 tombstones: the tombstone with a cross of Edmund Dzieduszycki and the grave of Klaudia Dzieduszycka of the Newlin Mazaraki family.

As part of the grant of 107,000 zł. the tombstone with the cross of Edmund Dzieduszycki (q. 2) and the grave of Klaudia Dzieduszycka of Newlin Mazaraki (q. 72) were renovated. The conservation work carried out so far at Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv has allowed us to develop working methods and develop successful cooperation with conservators from Poland and Ukraine. Lychakiv Cemetery became the final resting place for members of the Dzieduszycki family who died in the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. To date, 15 family graves have been preserved, some of which still require professional conservation care.

2023
The project consisted of the conservation of two tombstones - the second stage of work on the Mazaraki grave and work on the Neo-Gothic-style tomb of the family of General Józef Kalinowski (q.5).

This year's project includes the second stage of works on the Leopold Schimser-signed tomb of the Newlin Mazaraki family (field 72, the first stage took place in 2022) and carrying out works on the extended tomb in the style of the neo-Gothic edicule of the family of General Józef Kalinowski (field 5), which is located in the oldest part of the Cemetery, directly next to the traffic alley.

This is a continuation of the 3-year presence of the Dzieduszycki Family Association in Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv). Since 2020, it has been possible to renovate 6 stylistically diverse tombstones related to the family history and located in different parts of the cemetery: with the signature of H. Perier (Q.68), with a limestone figure of the Virgin Mary (Q.5), a modernist tomb with granite slabs by J. Markowski (Q.13), a limestone obelisk of Anastasia (Q.10), with a cross and a cast-iron Christ figure of the November insurgent Edmund (Q.2), and the foundation of the Newlin-Mazaraki family tombstone with the signature of Leopold Schimser (Q.72).
