Radosław Budzyński, 'Historian from Polish Inflants. Gustaw Manteuffel (1832-1916)". - publication by the Polonica Institute

Continuing its various activities in Latvia, the Polonika Institute has become the co-editor of a book written by Radosław Budzyński. The latest scholarly publication was awarded in the 13th edition of the Wladyslaw Pobog-Malinowski competition for the Best Historical Debut of the Year in the field of contemporary history.

The publication, published jointly with the Institute of National Remembrance, is the first attempt at a monographic look at the figure of the distinguished historian. It is an interesting study of Polish-Indian identity, and at the same time draws attention to the doubts that arise when researching Polish heritage on the frontiers of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The book is largely based on unknown or overlooked sources from public and private collections, which is of unquestionable value to the reader. The publication is richly illustrated, which perfectly complements its content.

Gustaw Manteuffel was a propagator of knowledge of Polish Inflants, a historian, ethnologist, sightseer and lawyer by profession. He was born in Drycany, where there is a symbolic place of his burial with a commemorative plaque in the church cemetery. In 2019. The Polonica Institute financed the reconstruction of the damaged grave tablet. It was made of Karrian marble with the inscription in Polish MIEJSCE / WIECZNEGO SPOCZYNKU / GUSTAW MANTEUFFLA / 1832-1916 / WYBITAL HISTORICIAN, / LAWYER, ETNOLOGIST. The plaque closed from the top with a segmented arch took the form of a historical plaque from the 1930s in Latvian found on the same grave.
