Biography:

Stanisław Julian Ostroróg (1834/36-1890), born in Mogilev, photographer, using the pseudonym 'Walery'.

He graduated from the Pazi Corps in St Petersburg and served as a captain in the Imperial Guard. During the Crimean War, he became aide-de-camp to General Władysław Zamoyski and began to take up photography, including daguerreotyping. After the war, he settled in Paris, where, in addition to photography, he experimented with inventions and literary activities.

From 1864, he ran a photographic workshop in Marseille and later opened a studio in Paris. In 1884, he moved to London, where he gained fame as a portrait photographer, including of Queen Victoria, earning the title 'Photographer to the Queen'. His studio was renowned for its high quality portraits executed on enamel and silk. He died in London and the business was taken over by his son.
