Biography:

Stanisław Szczepanowski (1846-1900), born in Kościan, son of Jan Władysław and Wanda, née Poplinska, economist, chemist, engineer, oil entrepreneur, member of the Austrian Parliament and the Galician National Sejm.

He graduated from the General Faculty of Technology at the Vienna University of Technology (1864-1867), and then studied at the École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures in Paris and in London, where he obtained an engineering degree in 1871. He worked for the British Ministry for Indian Affairs, learning about industrial technologies and economic mechanisms in Europe and beyond.

On his return to Galicia in 1879, he established one of the first oil mines in Sloboda Rungurska, which became the largest in the region. He also initiated the construction of a refinery, a mining machinery factory and transport infrastructure, including a railway line and pipelines. His activities contributed to the development of the oil industry in Galicia, although financial difficulties and conflicts with partners weakened his position in the industry. He was a founder of the Galician Joint Stock Society for the Oil Industry and co-founder of the People's School Society.
