Biography:

Stanisław Wyspiański (1869-1907), born in Kraków, son of Franciszek and Maria née Rogowska, artist, playwright and architect. He attended St Anne's Gymnasium in Kraków, and in 1887 began his studies at the Jagiellonian University. There, in the years 1887-1890 and 1896-1897, he studied history, art history and literature. At the same time, he studied at the School of Fine Arts in Kraków under Jan Matejko. In 1890 he embarked on a tour of Europe, visiting Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany and Prague. In 1891 he went to Paris again, where he studied for three years at the private Académie Colarossi. In 1895. Wyspiański was commissioned to create a polychrome in the Franciscan church in Kraków, which became one of the important projects in his oeuvre. He was one of the founders of the Towarzystwo Artystow Polskich "Sztuka" (Society of Polish Artists "Art") in 1897, and a year later became the artistic director of the weekly "Życie" (Life). He also collaborated with the Municipal Theatre in Kraków. In 1900, he married Teodora Teofila Pytko, and in 1901 wrote his most famous work, the drama 'Wesele'. A year later, he began working as a lecturer at Krakow's Academy of Fine Arts. He died in 1907.
