Biography:

Stefan Gałkowski (1912-1984), born in Warsaw, was a visual artist and tapestry maker. He studied at the Faculty of Painting of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he studied under Mieczysław Kotarbiński and Karol Stryjeński, graduating in 1934. At the same time, he developed his skills at the Faculty of Interior Design, working under Wojciech Jastrzębowski. In 1937, thanks to a scholarship from the National Culture Fund, he continued his education in France and Italy. From 1938 to 1939, he studied Interior Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. After the war, between 1946 and 1950, he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. From 1956, he taught at the Faculty of Artistic Tapestry of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, and from 1965 he headed the Department of Tapestry at the Faculty of Painting there. Together with his wife, Helena, they are regarded as key figures of the first generation of the Polish school of artistic textiles.
