Synagogue in Oni

The Oni Synagogue was built in 1895 to the design of a Polish architect with the participation of Jewish craftsmen from Thessaloniki. According to local legend, one of the rabbis from Oni was said to have studied in Warsaw and, fascinated by the Great Synagogue in Tłomackie, wished to create a similar temple in his city. The result was a magnificent building, the third largest synagogue in Georgia after Tbilisi and Kutaisi.

After being damaged by an earthquake in 1991, it was restored thanks to the involvement of the local Jewish community. It symbolically unites the heritage of Polish and Georgian Jews - the legend of its creation caused the memory of the now-defunct Warsaw synagogue to survive in the Caucasus mountains.
