In Philadelphia, in front of the Academy of Music, there is a plaque commemorating Leopold Stokowski. Stokowski directed the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1912 to 1941, and was born on 18 April 1882 to a Polish-Irish family in London. In 1905 he came to the USA, where he spent most of his life. He was a founder of the American Symphony Orchestra and won an honorary Academy Award for his "contribution to the production of a feature-length animated film" entitled "Fantasia". "Fantasia" by Walt Disney.

The inscription on the plaque reads:

"Visionary music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, 1912-1941. With his unique combination of musical genius and charisma, he created the "Philadelphia Sound" and popularised classical music to the general public through the Disney film "Fantasia" and hundreds of recordings."
