Plaque commemorating Maurycy August Beniowski (1746-1786) in Antananarivo, Madagascar. The plaque is covered with an inscription in Polish and English and a relief portrait of the Count. Maurycy August Beniowski was an aristocrat of Hungarian-Slovakian origin, but he also saw himself as a Pole. He took part in the Bar Confederation, for which he was exiled deep into Russia. He escaped from captivity, making a remarkable journey through the Arctic Sea, the coast of Alaska, Japan and Taiwan to Macao in China, from where he made his way to Europe via the French colonies in the Indian Ocean and the southern coast of Africa. He also visited North America and supported the then nascent new state: the United States. In cooperation with France, he colonised Madagascar. In two years he conquered the island. Under his stewardship, roads were built, marshes drained and industrial plants established. A commemorative plaque dedicated to him has been placed in Madagascar's capital.
