Plaque commemorating the first Polish settlers in the Jamestown colony

A plaque commemorating the first Polish settlers in the Jamestown colony was created thanks to the efforts of members of the American Council for Polish Culture. The plaque was unveiled on 20 July 2012.

. The text on the plaque reads:

"Skilled craftsmen of Polish descent, recruited by the Virginia Company, began arriving in Jamestown aboard the ship "Mary and Margaret" around October 1, 1608. The Poles contributed to the development of the glassworks and the production of potash, ship materials and wood products. Soon samples of their work were sent to England. The workers were so highly regarded that apprentices were assigned to them so that their skills would 'not disappear with them'. Captain John Smith in his writings praised their work ethic. We know from court records that, following a labour dispute, full suffrage was granted to the Poles on 21 July 1619."
