Adjacent to the Town Hall, on the wall of the Maironis Museum of Lithuanian Literature building, there is a plaque commemorating Vladislav Starevich - a pioneer of world animation and an insect enthusiast. He was born in 1882 in Moscow, into a family of Polish nobility, and spent part of his life in Kaunas.

In 1910, at home in Kaunas, he decided to immortalise his collection of insects on film. He dressed dormant stag beetles in costumes and boots with uppers, and filmed their fight for a female. By dividing the movement into phases and shooting frame by frame, he created a pioneering stop-motion animated film.
