Biography:

Tekla Wołowska (1787-1871), born in Warsaw, Polish émigré, author of the first volume of the 'Polish History' (published by L. Martinet, Paris, 1860).

She married, on 17 October 1809, Franciszek Eliasz Wołowski, then assessor of the Court of First Instance of the Warsaw Department, later advocate of the Court of Cassation and counsellor of state (Lipkowski, pp. 202, 264; Bart., p. 463). The wedding took place in Warsaw, and witnesses included Filip Jasiński (cousin of the groom) and Ignacy Lanckoroński (uncle of the bride).

After the fall of the November Rising, she and her family emigrated to Paris, where her home became the centre of Polish émigré life. It was at Tekla Wołowska's house that Celina Szymanowska stayed before her marriage to Adam Mickiewicz. The Wołowskis took care of her, treating her as their own daughter.

She died in Paris on 9 May 1871, at the age of 83, at her residence at 9, rue de la Parme. The death was registered by Kazimierz Wołowski (son of the deceased, aged 57, a pensioner) and Charles Verceau (caretaker, aged 46). She was buried on 11 May 1871 in the 9th arrondissement of Paris (Russkij Nekropol, p. 14; B.C. burial books).

On the first anniversary of her death, 8 May 1872, a memorial service was held at the Church de la Trinité, signed by, among others, Ludwig Wołowski and his wife, Léon Faucher's widow, Kazimierz Wołowski, Feliks Wołowski and his wife, Louis Passy and his wife, and Mrs Jasieński and their children (ZKwBP).
