Biography:

Teresa Żarnower (1897-1949), born in Warsaw, sculptor, graphic artist, set designer and architect.

Between 1915 and 1920 she studied at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts, in the studio of Edward Wittig. She was a co-founder of the Blok art group and a member of the editorial committee of the magazine of the same name. After Mieczysław Szczuka's death, she published the magazine Dźwignia, which he had founded.

At the end of 1937, she left Poland and went to Paris. There, due to her difficult financial situation, she was rarely able to work creatively. After the outbreak of the Second World War, she became involved in the activities of the Office of Information and Documentation of the Ministry of Propaganda of the Polish Government in Exile, where she created propaganda posters, which unfortunately have not survived to this day.

After the capitulation of France, she left the country with the wave of Polish refugees, moving first to Spain and then to Portugal. After 14 months, she obtained a visa to the USA and arrived there in 1941, but the American authorities refused her the right to stay. She spent the next 17 months in Canada, where she engaged in artistic photomontage. She spent the last years of her life in the USA, where she probably died by suicide.

Her work was inspired by Constructivism. Her body of work includes sculptures, prints, photomontages and posters.
