What you can't see. Conservation and restoration of the Sorrowful Christ statue

We invite you to watch a reportage that gives more insight into the process of conservation and restoration of the sculpture of the Sorrowful Christ from the dome of the Boim Chapel in Lviv.

In the more than 400-year history of the sculpture of the Sorrowful Christ, the exhibition "What you cannot see..." was the first opportunity to see this object up close. Every element, every detail has never before been so thoroughly examined and shown to the general public.

The figure of the Sorrowful Christ has undergone a complex conservation process. It started with signals from concerned Lviv residents who reported that shards of the statue were falling onto the pavement. Originally, the work was to be carried out entirely on site. When war broke out in Ukraine, the decision was made to transport the sculpture to Poland and carry out the work in a safe location. Once they were completed, we wanted to be able to talk about them and show the results. That is why we organised a unique exhibition.

At the moment, the Sorrowful Christ statue is the most thoroughly researched monument from Ukraine. The work, which began in 2021, was carried out thanks to the efforts and partnership of the city of Lviv, the Lviv National Art Gallery and the Polonika Institute. Part of the funds for the conservation were raised and donated by the Foundation for the Development of Banking Education and Science of the Lviv School of Banking. We sincerely thank all the institutions involved in this process!
