Biography:

Wacław Nijinsky (1889-1950) - Russian ballet dancer and choreographer with Polish roots, active in the Russian Empire, France, Great Britain, South America, Austria-Hungary and Switzerland. Considered one of the most important dancers of the 20th century. He gained popularity while performing with Sergei Diaghilev's Russian Ballets. He came from the family of Tomasz and Eleonora Nijinsky, graduates of the ballet school at the Grand Theatre in Warsaw. Despite his poor Polish language skills, he considered himself a Pole, as evidenced by his correspondence with the Polish opera singer Jan Reszke. He graduated from the Imperial Theatre School in St Petersburg under Legat, Obukhov and Cecchetti. He made his debut as a dancer in 1907 in Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. Stage partner of Bronislava Nijinska, Matilda Krzesinska, Olga Prieobrazhenskaya, Anna Pavlova and Tamara Karsavina. From 1911 he was associated with Diaghilev's Russian Ballets. He made his debut as a choreographer in Debussy's Afternoon of a Faun in 1912. From 1912 he was married to the Hungarian dancer Romola de Pulszky.
