Biography:

Wanda Chełmońska (1891-1971) - Polish painter, active in Poland and France. She was born in Kuklówka. Raised exclusively by her mother, Maria née Korwin-Szymanowski, she was the unrecognised daughter of the painter Józef Chełmoński. From 1914 to 1920, she stayed in Paris, where she studied art history, at the University of Paris (commonly known as the Sorbonne)m and painting, first at the École des Beaux-Arts and then at the atelier of Maurice Denis and André Lhote. From 1924, although she lived in Poland, she travelled regularly to France. She gained recognition for her portraits, although still lifes and folk-themed compositions can also be found in her work.
