Biography:

Wawrzyniec Gucewicz (1753-1798), born in Migańce, son of Szymon and Katarzyna Masulis. With the help of Bishop Ignacy Jakub Massalski, whom he met at the diocesan seminary, Wawrzyniec completed his training as an architect in western Europe. He trained in France at the Royal Academy of Arts and at the school of Jacques-François Blondel. In his youth, he also travelled to Rome and visited Copenhagen. Returning to Lithuania, he took up his profession. He completed the construction of the palace in Verkiai, led the reconstruction of Vilnius Cathedral, and rebuilt Vilnius Town Hall. He taught at Vilnius University in 1793-1794 and 1797-1798. He died while working, as a result of a fall from scaffolding during the renovation of the Chapel of St Casimir in Vilnius Cathedral.
