Biography:

Wincenty Sleńdziński (1837-1909), born in Skrebiny near Wiłkomirsk, son of Aleksander Józef Sleńdziński and Karolina Korgowdówna, painter. In 1855 he left for Moscow, where he studied religious painting at the School of Fine Arts. On his return to Vilnius in 1863, he was arrested for contacts with insurgents and exiled to the Nizhgorod Governorate for 20 years. In 1867 he was allowed to leave for Kharkiv. In 1872 he went to Kraków, where he met Jan Matejko. He then went to Dresden, where he lived with Jozef Ignacy Kraszewski and his family. In 1875, after accidentally crossing the Austro-Hungarian border while wandering, he was ordered to return to Kharkiv. In 1883, thanks to an imperial amnesty, he returned to Vilnius and married the widow of a local photographer.
