Biography:

Wisława Szymborska (1923-2012), born in Prowent, daughter of Wincenty Szymborski and Anna Maria née Rottermund, poet, essayist and translator, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature (1996). She made her debut in 1945 with the poem "Szukam słowa" in "Dziennik Polski", and her first volume of poetry "Dlatego żyjemy" (That's Why We Live) was published in 1952. She is the author of the collections "Wołanie do Yeti", "Ludzie na moście" and "Koniec i początek". For many years, she collaborated with "Życie Literackie", running the column "Lektury nadobowiązkowe". She was a member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, the PEN Club and the Polish Writers' Association. She died in Krakow and was buried at the Rakowicki cemetery.
