Biography:

Wojciech Gerson (1831-1901), born in Warsaw, painter, landscape painter and art historian, a representative of realism. He studied at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts, the Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg and with Leon Cogniet in Paris. He was one of the founders of the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts and a professor of the Warsaw Drawing Class. He created historical and patriotic paintings and Tatra landscapes. He was also involved in journalism, art criticism and architecture. He was actively involved in the Evangelical-Augsburg parish. His pupils included Józef Chełmoński, Leon Wyczółkowski and Władysław Podkowiński. In 1896, he became an honorary member of the Society of the Polish National Museum in Rapperswil.
