Gripsholm Castle in Mariefred

The original castle was built in 1380, but its current Renaissance form is the result of a rebuilding by Gustav I Vasa in 1526. Since then, the castle served as a royal residence for almost two centuries, changing its function to that of a prison in 1713. Today, its interiors house a museum with an impressive collection of paintings depicting generations of Swedish royalty.

Sigismund III Vasa, later King of Poland and Sweden, son of Anna Jagiellon and John III Vasa, was born in Gripsholm Castle in 1566.

On the first floor of the castle, in the so-called Round Salon, are portraits of rulers who reigned in other powers of the time during the reign of Swedish King Gustav III. Among them is a painting depicting Stanisław August Poniatowski.

On the ground floor of the castle, one can find a room with paintings depicting Polish members of the royal family from the 17th and 18th centuries, including John II Casimir Vasa, August III and Anna Leszczyńska.
