Forgotten universities of the Rzeczpospolita

Few remember that the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth had "its Athens". We invite you to learn about the Samogitian Athens, the Athens of Volhynia and the Oxford of Spiš.

We present the history of places very important for Polish cultural heritage abroad: Krosno in Samogitia, Krzemieniec in Volhynia and Podoliniec in Spiš.
These three distant towns, today located within the borders of different countries - Lithuania, Ukraine and Slovakia - once played an important role not only in the history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, but also of the whole of Europe. They were important educational and cultural centres, which attracted students eager to acquire a good education, as well as lecturers from various European countries.

As a result, both the towns and their schools were compared to the cradle of education - Athens - or to respectable universities with centuries-old traditions, hence the name Krosėžie "Samogitian Athens", Krzemieniec "Wallachian Athens" and Podoliniec "Spišské Oxford".
