Biography:

Zygmunt Landau (1898-1962), born in Lodz, painter, associated with the École de Paris. He came from a family with rabbinical traditions. He studied under Henryk Epstein and Jakub Kacenbogen, and then at the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw. From 1920 he lived in Paris, where he continued his artistic education and established contacts with artists such as Kisling and Modigliani, whose style influenced his work.

During the Second World War, he went into hiding in Saint-Tropez. The experiences of this period influenced a stylistic change - his painting became softer in tone, dominated by family scenes, nudes, motifs of motherhood and rural labour. After the war, he lived in Nice, later returned to Paris and moved to Israel towards the end of his life. His last work was a stained glass window in the chapel of the YMCA in Tiberias.

He was the father of four children, including the French psychoanalyst Jean-Pierre Landau and the painter Esther Franck.
