Biography:

Zygmunt Menkes (1896-1986), Lviv-born painter and sculptor, associated with the École de Paris. He trained at the Lviv Industrial School and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lviv. In 1922 he left for Berlin, where he studied with Alexander Archipenko, and then settled in Paris, where he became associated with the émigré artistic community. In 1935 he settled permanently in New York, where he also worked as an educator. His work includes religious subjects, portraits and genre scenes, and during the Second World War he tackled the Holocaust. He has participated in numerous international exhibitions and has received numerous awards, including the Alfred Jurzykowski Foundation.
