Biography:

Stanislaw Samostrzelnik; Stanislaw of Mogiła; Latin Stanislaus Claratumbensis (1490-1541) - Polish painter, illuminator and miniaturist, Cistercian. The monk's work, which coincided with the development of the Renaissance, still refers to the Gothic tradition (it is included in the so-called soft style). Samostrzelnik, after passing his examinations, joined the Cistercian Order in Mogiła near Kraków, where he was quickly promoted to the position of illuminator thanks to the support of the abbot. In 1506, he began decorating the vaults of the monastery with polychrome, at the same time adopting the new name Stanislaus Claratumbensis, inspired by the Latin name of Mogila (Clara Tumba), i.e. Stanislaus Jasnomogilski or Stanislaus of Mogila. In 1511 he moved to Szydłowiec, where he was commissioned by Krzysztof Szydłowiecki (the town's owner) to illustrate the family's genealogical book. Later, in 1514, he moved to Opatów, and after Szydłowiecki's death in 1532, he returned to Mogiła. In Mogiła he created the illustrations for Olbracht Gasztold's Prayer Book (1528) and set up his own studio in Kraków. There he carried out commissions for the patriciate, the clergy and the royal court, creating, among other things, illuminations for the Catalogue of the Archbishops of Gniezno, the Missal, the Evangeliary and the Holy Thursday Pontifical for Bishop Piotr Tomicki. He also decorated Queen Jadwiga's prayer book, the peace treaty with Turkey and the flag presented to the Polish king by Albrecht Hohenzollern during the Prussian homage (1525). Samostrzelnik is also the author of polychrome paintings at the Cistercian Abbey in Mogiła (in the church, cloisters and library) and a portrait of Bishop Piotr Tomicki in the cloisters of the Franciscan monastery. In 2019, fragments of his polychrome were discovered in the priory building and abbot's house of the Cistercian monastery in Mogila.
