Biography:

Tadeusz Kuntze (1727-1793), born in Zielona Góra, son of Gotfryd and Anna Maria Sambler. He grew up at the court of Andrzej Załuski, Bishop of Kraków, who recognised his talent and sent him to study in Italy. He stayed in Rome from 1754 to 1756, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under Lodovico Mazzanti. In 1756, he left for Paris. In 1765 he settled permanently in Rome. He was known as Taddeo Pollacco. He executed numerous frescoes in Italy and Poland. For twelve years he was the official painter of the Augustinian order. Kuntze was particularly supported by Cardinal Henri Benoît Stuart, the second son of Jacques François Stuart and the Polish Duchess Marie-Clémentine Sobieska, who, as Cardinal-Bishop of Frascati, commissioned him to paint frescoes for the Tuscolano Seminario and the Bishop's Palace in Frascati, as well as for the national church of the Poles in Rome. Kuntze was also commissioned by the Borghes to decorate the Borghese Palace and the Villa Borghese in Rome. He also produced many oil paintings. He is sometimes referred to as the most famous Polish painter of the 18th century.
