Biography:

Józef Piłsudski (1867-1935), born in Zułów, son of Józef Wincenty Piłsudski and Maria née Billewicz. He studied medicine at the Imperial Kharkiv University. In 1892, he joined the PPS. In 1916, he became a member of the Provisional Council of State (TRS). In 1918, the Regency Council entrusted him with the mission to form a national government. He was head of the armed forces during the Polish-Soviet War. In 1926, he led a military coup d'état. He then seized real power in the state. He introduced an authoritarian system and significantly reduced the role of parliament. In the 1928 elections, the pro-Sanation grouping of Marshal Józef Piłsudski's Non-Partisan Bloc for Cooperation with the Government (BBWR) won. He served twice as Prime Minister (1926-1928; 1930). He died in Belvedere.
