Cemetery in Mosty Wielkie

Mosty Wielkie | Ukraine
ukr. Wełyki Mosty (Великі Мости)
The Catholic cemetery in Mosty Wielkie is located in the north-eastern part of the town, behind the municipal park and the former synagogue. It was probably established in the last quarter of the 19th century, which can be deduced by the dates from the surviving gravestones. The oldest of them, with a Polish inscription, is the imposing monument on the grave of the Dyszkiewicz family (Józefa Dyszkiewicz - died 1871 and Karol Dyszkiewicz - died 1886).

The cemetery is still active and thus meticulously maintained. It features an eclectic chapel dating from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It has a triangular gable decorated with volutes and is topped with a little bell.

From the entrance gate there are two paths (one to the left, along the fence and the other crossing the cemetery diagonally), where the oldest gravestones are located. Ukrainian ones predominate. In addition, most of the gravestones in this part of the cemetery date from the inter-war period.

According to Hauser, the tombstones are not of exceptional artistic value. However, he draws attention, for example, to the tombstone of Otylia (d. 1928) and Ferdinand (d. 1929) Tull, made of pink stone and with an embedded, decorative cross. Near the chapel, on the other hand, there is the tombstone of Father Ignacy Nadolski (d. 1936), made of black marble, by L. Makolondra from Lviv, and the tombstone of Roman Sass-Soroczyński, mayor of Mosty Wielkie. Closer to the side alley, however, stand two obelisks on the graves of Celina Michalina Land (d. 1888) and the district doctor Franciszek Lang (d. 1920). Hauser's attention is also drawn to the decorative cast-iron crosses, which are mostly unnamed.
