Bershada cemetery

The Catholic cemetery in Berszada lies directly next to the parish church of St Stanislaus, the building of which was erected in neo-Gothic style in the first half of the 19th century as the burial chapel of the Moszyński and Juriewicz families. Zbigniew Hauser lists 25 tombstones that are overturned or without finials (crosses), while he describes the cemetery area itself as weeded and quite well cared for. Most of the gravestones have inscriptions from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, but two much older monuments have survived: that of Józefa Prolewicz, who died in 1834 (a massive, simple cross on a low base), and that of Tytus Odolański from 1856. Of great splendour is the black marble obelisk of Konstanty Wilanowski and the tombstone of the court official Ignacy Tarzyński in the shape of an irregular block on a pedestal decorated with a palm leaf bas-relief. Both date from the early 20th century. Several monuments in the cemetery have the form of a knotted trunk.
