Cemetery in Gierwielańce

Cemetery with Polish gravestone monuments. Information about the cemetery has been published (see bibliography). According to Lewkowski and Walczak: "An active, former Catholic cemetery of the gentry area (now a village cemetery), located on the south-western edge of the village (...) Surrounded by fields to the north, west and south, and by a road and homestead buildings to the east. (...) It occupies an area of 0.065 ha. Fenced in by a stone enclosure with a gate on the eastern side. The cemetery was established in the second half of the 19th century (...) The condition is good". In the cemetery there are mostly gravestones from the 1st half of the 20th century and contemporary ones. The oldest gravestone, from 1884, belongs to Justyna Gierwelaniecowa, née Bieniakońska, and Józef Gierwelaniec. It has the form of a granite pedestal with a cast iron cross. The inscription reads: 'JUSTYNA Z BIENIAKOŃSKICH / GIERWIELAŃCOWA / LIVED 51 YEARS AGO. 15 DECEMBER 1884 / AND SON JOZEF LIVED AGE 20 UM. / 10 APRIL 1884 R / P O Z. M." The cemetery probably contains the graves of AK soldiers, Grzegorz Krupowicz and Bendedykt Macel, but it was not possible to find them. It is still worth recalling the inscription from the gravestone of Jozef Borowski: "JOZEF BOROWSKI / UM. 28 MAY 1893 R. / AGED 58 / ASKS FOR A SIGH TO GOD".
