Cemetery in Rawa Ruska

Located in the western part of the town and about 500 metres from the parish church, the cemetery was probably established in the 1st half of the 19th century, judging from the dates on the surviving gravestones. The oldest monument appears to be a now nameless tall column on a square plinth in the southern part of the necropolis.

The most beautiful, however, is the one bearing the inscription 'Johanna', surmounted by a sculpture of an angel with a wreath of roses in her hand and decorated on the pedestal with crossed swords entwined with a wreath. This classicist monument probably dates from the first half of the 19th century.

The cemetery is still active, but the quarters with Polish inscriptions are very neglected. Many tombs have been stripped of their inscriptions and some have been appropriated. They are located on the alley diverging to the left at the entrance. The former spatial layout has been partially preserved.

There are two ruined chapels in the cemetery. One of them, neo-Gothic, unplastered and built of brick, has an epitaph of Karolina (d. 1886) and Stefania of Helmans (d. 1888) Wilczyński in its finial. Its façade contains semi-circular recesses (for statues?) and a doorway with fragments of a dilapidated lattice. The second façade, built of fieldstone, is surmounted by a triangular gable and has an arcaded passage.

Hauser's attention is drawn to the once imposing (now devastated) monument in the southern part of the necropolis, in the shape of a tall stone barrow topped by a cross. Its plaque has been restored, but without the inscription. This monument commemorates the Polish aviators who died in a plane crash in 1926. Its ensemble also includes the stone obelisks that preceded it, covered by an openwork cast-iron finial in the shape of a tall chapel topped with a cross.

As far as tombstones are concerned, the author of the study mentions a monument topped with a statue of the Immaculate Mary belonging to Antonina Płoszaj (d. 1809); a stone monument decorated with masquerade and ogival ornaments on the grave of Jan and Rozalia Hollers and black marble obelisks in cast iron fences on the graves: Jadwiga née Turzańska Postępska (died 1935) and Jan Postępski (died 1932) and Tadeusz Trzaska Podbielski (died 1903).
