Cemetery in Satanov

The Catholic cemetery in Satanov is adjacent to the parish church built in the 1990s on the site of the cemetery chapel (no longer exists). Fortunately, this cemetery did not suffer from the destruction of such buildings, so it is one of the best preserved necropolises in the region of the former Podolia Province. It is a cemetery from the early 19th century. Many of the monuments represent a higher artistic level.

The oldest gravestone is, decorated with an ornament of a skull with tibias, a monument to the border judge Joachim Drużbacki, who died in 1810, and a slightly younger one to the Wiśniowski couple, which was probably created between 1812 and 1823. It is also distinctive because of the elaborate inscriptions engraved on the four sides of the pedestal. In addition, the tombstones of the Satan pastoralists attract attention. One from 1893 with a beautiful rhymed inscription, funded by the parishioners, another one from 1869, two-stepped with a stone cross and rich ornamentation: bas-relief wreaths, the Eye of Providence and a crescent moon in panels with quarter-circle chamfered corners, and a third one in neo-Gothic style with a truncated cross. The gravestones near the entrance of the church of Piotr Ferensbach Faszowicz (died 1888) and the gravestone of Franciszka Wolska (died 1884) stand out in terms of splendour. An equally impressive tombstone, also topped by a column, is that of Jan Gawroński (died 1847), who held the position of president. The cemetery is dominated by "Podolski" crosses, but there are also some tombstones. The youngest tombstones are from the post-war period (sporadic cases), e.g. from 1961.

Zbigniew Hauser noted in his publication 155 preserved tombstones with inscriptions, a few without inscriptions, besides which he listed 75 more tombstones which he saw in 1992, but after 9 years he did not find anymore. This was probably a consequence of the construction of the new church.
