Old Sambor Cemetery

Picturesquely laid out on a hill in the western part of the town, the cemetery was probably established in the late 1830s and early 1840s, as can be deduced from the dates on the surviving gravestones. The oldest of these is a classicist stele with an acroterion belonging to Pauline and Angelika Weimess (d. 1840), who died in childhood, with a German inscription. There is also a loose tin inscription plaque of Sidonia Gröhman from 1841.

The new part of the necropolis, almost entirely with inscriptions in Ukrainian, is well maintained. The old one, on the other hand, with Polish inscriptions, is more neglected. Many of the gravestones there are broken or overgrown with vegetation. The spatial arrangement of the necropolis is blurred - it consists of an "upper" and a "lower" part.

Hidden deep in the overgrowth is the cast-iron tombstone of the mayor of Stary Sambor - Antoni Burghardt (d. 1874) with rich neo-Gothic decoration in the form of openwork constructions, maswerki and ogives and in an ornamental cast-iron fence. Nearby is an ornate stone memorial, without a cross, on the grave of Karoline of Seeling Sondenfels (d. 1886).

Hauser also draws attention to the tall obelisk in black marble on the grave of Maciej Strec (d. 1896); the pink stone monument signed by Fr. Langner on the Miller grave; the arcaded and niche-decorated gravestone of Marian Staniszewski (d. 1901); the neglected stone monument on the grave of Stanisław Obuszkiewicz (d. 1908) or the neo-Gothic gravestone of the tax collector and mayor of Stary Sambor - Henryk Rogoda (d. 1911).

From most of the inscriptions we can learn what functions the buried persons held while they were still alive. It is a kind of chronicle of the social life of the town.
In the cemetery there is also a styleless chapel, with pilasters in the corners and semicircular windows.
