Cemetery in Subotniki

Church cemetery with Polish gravestone monuments. Documentation was made for the cemetery (5 cards stored in the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage). Information about the cemetery has been published (see bibliography).

According to Anna Lewkowska, Jacek Lewkowski and Wojciech Walczak, there is a cemetery in Subotniki next to St Władysław's Church, built in 1900. Six tombstones have been preserved there. The oldest, from 1827, has the form of a granite boulder with a cast iron cross and an inscription: "TU LEŻĄ ZWŁOKI FRANCISZKA JANKOWSKIEGO / CHORĄŻEGO WOJSK POLS: ŻYŁ LAT 59 / UM: Ru 1798 MAR. 13. D. AND HIS WIFE / MARYANNA Z MASŁÓW JANKOWSKA / LIVED 78 / DIED Ru 1827 MARCA 13 DNIA. / THEY ASK FOR THREE HAIL MARYS". Subotnica parish priest Jozef Mikielunas (died 1905) and parish organist Waclaw Sadowski (died 1945) are also buried here. The church contains the sepulchral crypt of the Umiastowskis, owners of Žemoslavl.

According to Lewkowski and Walczak, there is also an active Catholic cemetery in the village, on its eastern edge. Established in the mid-19th century on the plan of an irregular pentagon, it has a 1.6 ha area surrounded by a stone wall. Most of the gravestones are from the first half of the 20th century and contemporary. The oldest, from 1865, has the following inscription: "Here lie the remains of the late Jan Zulpa / LIVED 60 DIED 1865 / AND SON DOMINIK LIVED 31 / DIED 1864 / AND THE WHOLE FAMILY / PRAISE FOR 3 ANGELIC HEALING / THIS MEMORY HAS BEEN PLACED BY JAN ZULPA". Noteworthy are the gravestones of the servants of the Umiastowski family mentioned above: Jozef Hryniuk (died 1917), the cook (he was a cook for 70 years) and the maid Hermina Preuss (died 1919). The following inscription is also worth quoting: "POR. EDWARD OZIEMBŁO "LUDWIG" / COMMANDER 1ST PLT. 1 KOMP. III BAT. V BK / 77TH PP OF THE NATIONAL ARMY FALLEN IN / BATTLE AGAINST THE NAZI OCCUPANT / 8. VI 1944 / FALLEN FOR THE FREEDOM OF THE FATHERLAND / COMRADES-IN-ARMS AND COMPATRIOTS / GRAVE OF THE UNKNOWN POLISH SOLDIER / 1920, 1939 - 1945".
