Surviliškės cemetery

Cemetery at the Holy Trinity Church with Polish grave monuments. Documentation was made for the cemetery (3 cards stored in the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage). Information about the cemetery has been published (see bibliography).
According to Anna Lewkowska, Jacek Lewkowski and Wojciech Walczak, the active Catholic cemetery has a rectangular plan and an area of 0.7 ha and is fenced (from various sides) with a wooden fence, a stone rampart and a stone and brick wall. It has two parts - the western part (0.3 ha), originally used as a church cemetery (the outline of the foundations of the 18th century church remains; the oldest gravestones from the 2nd half of the 19th century are found here) and the 20th century eastern part with gravestones from the last and present century. The oldest gravestone, from 1851, has - as the authors mentioned above write - an unusual form: "on a granite base a rectangular pedestal with a profiled base. On the pedestal lies a cushion with tassels at the corners, tied with diagonal strings. On the cushion, on the diagonal side, isosceles cross." The inscription reads, "ROMAN POPŁAWSKI / URODZIŁ SIĘ 28 LUTEGO 1822 R. / DIED 19 NOVEMBER 1878 flank: TO THE BEST MAN / flank: TO THE BEST FATHER". There are also unidentified burials of AK soldiers in the cemetery.
