Cemetery of Polish soldiers killed between 1914 and 1918

In a park just above the Nemunas River, near Love Island, there is a cemetery for Poles who died in 1914-1918.The Poles buried here probably served in the Tsarist army, presumably they were soldiers guarding the nearby watchtower. The watchtower was located near Druskininkai's bridge over the Nemunas during the First World War. Poles died at the hands of the Germans, who manned the opposite bank of the Nemunas. The fighting here lasted a long time, was bloody and fierce, and the battlefield was extensive. Many bodies were fished out of the Nemunas, others were found on nearby beaches. It is said that an unnamed Polish Army soldier, killed in September 1920 in the battles against the Bolsheviks, is also buried here. In total, at least 126 Poles have been buried here since 1914.Marshal Jozef Pilsudski, during his stays in Druskininkai, often visited this forest cemetery. He was also the one who ordered a solid iron cross to be erected here in 1933, which is still standing today. The cemetery is small - there is a mass grave with a large tomb, and a few individual graves next to it. On the slab of the tomb is carved the inscription: "Pray for us ! P.P. 1914." The cross is engraved with the date: "April 1933", while the cement filling of the grave slab bears two dates: "1914" i "1918".
