Ewa Ziembinska, 'Sara Lipska. Versatile Artist" - publication of the Polonica Institute

The Polonica Institute and the National Museum in Warsaw invite you to discover a publication presenting the life and work of Sara Lipska (1882-1973).

Although the life story of the book's protagonist begins in Mława, it takes place mainly in Paris, where she left in 1912. The artist's biography is meticulously reconstructed by Dr Ewa Ziembińska, the author of the publication, based mainly on French archival material, letters and memoirs, and interviews conducted in Paris. The character of Sara Lipska focuses on a variety of problems, but also typical of a large group of women artists. Everything is presented against the background of the Jewish backgrounds from which she came, and set in the realities of Paris at the time, including the Polish diaspora.

The artist's biography provides evidence of her membership of the Parisian bohemia, the world of ballet and theatre, but also of her links with the business of the time. In addition to the exhibitions in which she participated or her collaboration with Russian ballets and Leon Bakst's company, it is known that she owned boutiques with her own creations on the Champs-Elysees in Paris and in Monte Carlo.

The publication, which was published as part of the Institute's Polonica series 'Studies and Materials', presents a wide cross-section of Sara Lipska's work and adds significant value to research on the Polish artistic diaspora in France and the environment of the Ecole de Paris.

We invite you to read an excerpt from the book.
