Grave of 3 Polish prisoners of Stutthof Concentration Camp in the local cemetery

On 5 May 1945, a barge carrying 345 inmates of Stutthof Concentration Camp who had left the camp on 5 April 1945 entered the fishing port of Klintholm on the island of Mon. Among them were 189 Poles. The barge was intercepted by a detachment of the Danish resistance movement, which led to the release of the prisoners. A relief operation for the survivors was organised by the Danish Red Cross. A makeshift hospital was set up in a local hotel, where the sick, emaciated and those infected with spotted fever were sent for treatment and convalescence. However, despite the care, 21 prisoners died. In the village of Stege, 3 deceased Polish prisoners were buried in a common grave. On the grave there is a stone on which an inscription in Polish is engraved: "Here rest the martyred in Stutthof concentration camp, Poles / ŚP / Franciszek Sochacki / Leonard Kurczyński / Stefan Tarwacki / Honour their memory / year 1945".
