Grave and memorial to Polish Army soldiers killed in the Polish-Bolshevik war

In the battles between Polish soldiers and the Bolshevik army in 1920 near Rohatyn, 49 Polish Army soldiers were killed. They were buried in a common grave. The monument in their honour was erected in 1935. It was probably commissioned by the community of Rohatyn. The author of the female sculpture on the monument was the sculptor Antoniak from Stanislavov.

The monument consists of a high trapezoidal concrete base topped by a stone female figure standing sideways. The life-size figure leans against a stone wall, providing a base for a small cross with a crown of thorns. The figure's right hand is extended towards the cross, while her left hand holds a palm branch. Below the figure was a slab of white marble with the inscription 'To the Defenders of the Fatherland'. On the sides of the figure, on small bases stand stone eagles, and below them are stone vases. In front, on a small base decorated with a small marble inscription plate with the inscription: "Here rests 49 Polish soldiers / fallen in heavy fights / for the freedom of the Fatherland / in the years / 1919-1920 / Honour to the Heroes!", a decorative stone candle with flames is placed. The monument is surrounded by a concrete fence of low plinths and posts topped with concrete balls. The fence also limits the several-step entrance to the memorial.

During the Second World War the monument was slightly damaged by rifle shots (the arm of the cross and part of the crown of thorns on the cross were destroyed then, there were also losses in the drapery of the mantle on the female figure and on the back of the eagle sculpture placed on the western side). On the other hand, it is likely that this commemoration was deliberately devastated after the war - the heads and wings of both eagles were broken off, the upper plaque with the inscription was destroyed, decorative rosettes were torn out of the lower plaque, and the right front post in the fence was destroyed.

The monument was restored in 1998 by a team of conservators under the direction of Dr Janusz Smaza. The work was financed by the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites.
