Graves of evacuated concentration camp prisoners

A few kilometres west of the city, on the island of Frösön, near the Frösö Kyrka church, there is a cemetery where about 20 prisoners of German concentration camps who were evacuated from Germany as part of the Swedish Red Cross relief operation in 1945 are buried. - comes from the colour of the vehicles used to transport the evacuees. Upon arrival in Sweden, the evacuees were sent for treatment or convalescence, including to Östersund and the island of Frösön, but despite care, some of them died of exhaustion and acquired diseases. It is known that the cemetery contains the graves of 5 Polish citizens: Eugeniusz Jasiński (1925-1946), Antoni Bartnikowski (died 1946), Zbigniew Wólczyński (1920-1946), Eugeniusz Górski (1921-1946), Paweł Czaja (1921-1946). It is believed that another Pole was buried here, whose name is recorded in a distorted form as Gesiav Luczez (d.1946). The graves were marked with white wooden crosses. The plaque next to the graves bears the inscription in Swedish: "Här under de vita korsen vilar personer som vid andra världskrigets slut vistades i uppsamlingsläger i Europa. Genom svenska Röda Korsets försorg blevo de transporterade till Frösön och Östersund. Sjuka i tbc blevo de inlagda pa beredskapssjukhus för vard. Nagra av dessa människor fingo sluta sina dagar här i Jämtland och ligger nu begravda här' ('Here under the white crosses rest the people who were in the concentration camps in Europe at the end of the Second World War. Thanks to the care of the Swedish Red Cross, they were transported to Frösön and Östersund. Those suffering from tuberculosis were admitted to the emergency hospital for care. Some of these people ended their days here in Jämtland and are now buried here").
