Graves of victims of village pacification

During the Second World War, this village, located on the edge of the Rudnice Forest, was constantly troubled by Soviet partisans. At one point, a self-defence was organised there under the aegis of the Lithuanian administration to counter looting and attacks. In retaliation, the Soviet partisans punished the village by pacifying it on 29.01.1944, during which at least 38 people were murdered, including women and children, and the village was burnt down. The Soviet grouping taking part in the attack included, among others, a Jewish partisan unit. The victims were buried in the local cemetery in individual and family graves, while some were laid to rest in the cemetery in Butrymańce and in Bieniakonia (now in Belarus). For many years the graves remained neglected. In view of the dispersal of the graves of the victims of this pacification in different locations, in 2004. The Council for the Protection of Remembrance of Struggle and Martyrdom commemorated the murdered civilians by erecting a granite cross with an inscription and the established names of the victims right next to the cemetery in Koniuchy. The inscription on the monument reads: "To the memory of the inhabitants of the village of KONIUCHY men, women and children murdered on the night of 29 January 1944 during an attack by Soviet partisan units from the Rudnice Forest". Below it is engraved the Lithuanian text: "KANIUKU kaimo gyventojamsvyrams, moterims, vaikams, kuriuos 1944 metu sausio 29 nakti, antpuolio metu nužudesovietiniai partizanaiiš Rudninku Giriosatminti". Beneath it are the names of 38 victims.
