Biography:

Jerzy Władysław Franciszek Maria Sołtan (1913-2005), born in Prezma. Studied at Warsaw Polytechnic (1931-1935). He fought in the September campaign, during which he was taken prisoner. At that time he translated Le Corbusier's writings. After the war, he went to meet the master in France and became his student. In 1954, he returned to Poland and began working at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. There he established the Artistic and Research Department. By the end of the 1950s, he had completed several important projects in Poland, such as the interiors of the Warszawa Śródmieście railway station and the Venice bar in Warsaw. An important achievement was the design of the Polish pavilion at the World Exhibition in Brussels (1958). In 1959, he left for the United States of America. There he lectured at Harvard. From 1967 to 1974, he served as dean of the Faculty of Architecture. An interesting development is the two elementary schools in Brockton, which Soltan designed together with Wojciech Fangor. In 2001, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Warsaw University of Technology.
